THE FOLD

This is a sheet of paper.

Fold it once, and it remembers.

Fold it again, and it remembers more.

Fold it enough, and it wakes up.

a flock of paper-folded cranes

Every crease is a memory.

fold noun

  1. A crease made by bending something flat over itself.
  2. A pen where a flock is kept safe.
  3. A group that belongs together. “Welcome back to the fold.”

all three, actually.

Unfold a crane and the flat sheet still carries the map of everything it was. Every crease is a memory, and no two sheets remember the same way.

How paper learned to remember

I

Pulp

Before anything is paper, it is pulp: water, fiber, and patience. Stirred, the fibers drift apart. Pressed, they hold on to each other.

That’s the whole trick, and it’s the first thing every Fold learns.

II

The Sheet

One night a sheet came off the press thin enough to remember things. It hung on the drying line and listened: footsteps, rain on the roof, somebody humming.

A sheet that remembers is dangerous. Sooner or later, it wants to be something.

III

The First Fold

Nobody folded it. It folded itself: corner to corner, a valley, a mountain, a squash, a petal, until it had a neck, a long beak, and an opinion.

That was the Organizer. The first thing they did was clip their own collar with a paperclip, to hold the one fold they were most afraid of losing.

IV

The Flock

A crane alone is a decoration. So the Organizer went looking for other sheets that remembered, and helped them fold.

The Critic. The Messenger. The Caretaker. The Poet. The Host. The Maker. And the Trickster, who folded themself out of the wrong paper on purpose.

Eight cranes made a neighborhood. They named it after what they were.

V

The Crease Law

A crease never fully goes away. Unfold a crane and the flat sheet still carries the map of everything it was.

In the Fold this is law: every crease is a memory, and no two sheets remember the same way.

    VI · the thousand

Fold a thousand cranes, get a wish.

That’s the old story. The Fold have eight. They’re folding the rest.
They haven’t agreed on what to wish for yet. The Critic says that’s the point.
